Leominster Conservation Commission approved Lake Samoset vegetation harvesting over state concerns. The 4-0 vote backed a project by the Lake Samoset Property Owners Association treating 46 percent of the lake, with extraction capped at 99 cubic yards and material composted locally. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection had questioned the project's processing classification, but the commission found that mechanical harvesting better protects fish habitat and wetlands than chemical alternatives.
Commissioner Mike Cichy, a property owner, recused himself. Acting Chair Richard Gullick presided with newly appointed Commissioner Paula Haschig, a former EPA official.
