Library Opens Registration for New Tween Book Boxes Program

LEOMINSTER — Leominster Public Library is opening registration for a new Tween Book Boxes program and adding fresh events for kids and teens to its late-August calendar, even as the town's civic calendar stays busy with board meetings and hearings in the week ahead.

SCHOOLS Leominster Public Schools has a run of welcome events on the calendar for new and returning students this month. Fall Brook Elementary hosts an ice cream social for new students on Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by Sky View Middle School's sixth-grade ice cream social on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. Priest Street Elementary holds a playdate for incoming students on Friday, Aug. 21, from 2 to 3 p.m. Kindergarten orientation sessions at Fall Brook follow on Sept. 3, split by last name, with a district-wide open house set for Sept. 15.

COMMUNITY & ARTS Leominster Public Library is opening registration Sept. 1 for its new Tween Book Boxes program, giving tween patrons a fresh reason to check in with the youth department. The library has also added a "Kindness in Bloom" event for kids on Aug. 25 and a "Meet and Greet with Penny the Cockapoo" on Sept. 1. On the teen side, Teen Tournament Tuesday has been canceled for two dates this month, Aug. 18 and Aug. 25, while Teen Writers Club, a movie afternoon and a custom Jenga session remain on the schedule.

COMING UP The city's Department of Public Works holds a household hazardous waste collection Saturday, Aug. 15. The Planning Board meets Monday, Aug. 17, followed by the Disability Commission on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and the Leominster Housing Authority on Wednesday, Aug. 19. At the library, Chess Club and a Strega Mama interactive story-time both fall on Aug. 17; an English Conversation Class and the Literary Leominster Book Club meet Aug. 18; and a drop-in game afternoon for adults runs Aug. 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. Teen Writers Club meets Aug. 19, a Teen Movie Thursday screening is set for Aug. 20, and a Teen Custom Jenga session runs Aug. 21.
